I was just reading this thread by Pine and it reminded me of my Dad's kombi he had way back when.
In 1959 while living in Ndola then Northern Rhodesia my Dad purchased a 1957 kombi and I think it was a 1100 and the front windows opened out and it had 2 swing out doors and a compartment between the front and back, please correct me if I am wrong?.
In the same year 59 my Mom and Dad as well as my 2 elder brothers and myself departed on a holiday trip to the South coast near Port Shepstone I think the resort was called Sea Park.
I was only about 4 or 5 at the time but can remember the roads where strip roads most of the way if not all the way, somewhere on the trip there where some road works where we had to stop and I ended up with tar on my family jewels, Mom used nail polish remover to try and get the tar off the jewels and I ended up doing a Zulu dance around the Kombi for about 15 min.
We arrived at this place near Port Shepstone 4-5 days later and I remember that there where Heavy Floods while we where and fortunately there was a new bridge being built at the time of the floods but the only bridge over the river that one had to use was a steel bridge and that got washed away along with another one up the coast so we where stuck there for I think 3 weeks or so.
We had no money left apart for the trip back and they where still working on the new bridge which was not yet open to traffic but my Dad had to get back so he told the workers on the bridge to get out the way and off we went making it across to the other side and we made our way back to Ndola I think in about 4-5 days.
The only problem we had with the Kombi was fuel starvation.

Thanks for sharing the past Pine.
